REVIEW OF: The People vs. George Lucas
*THIS FILM IS AVAILABLE TO WATCH ON NETFLIX INSTANT STREAMING*
The PLOT: Star Wars/Indiana Jones nerds unite to get it all off of their chests... all that hot... greasy... George Lucas... stuff... finally. They've cleaned it off. Finally.
The CAST: Lots and lots of awesome nerds.
The GOOD: Let's start off by pointing out that everyone has an opinion. Which is funny, because NO ONE adheres to his or her own opinion (as though it were gospel) the way that Star Wars fans do. Which is clearly depicted in this film. The movie's charm is obvious from the get go, with penciled-in opening credits that laughably oversimplify the career of George Lucas. From there, we get to know some of the film's more serious fans as they explain why they love this franchise so much.... Which, of course, gets truly nasty as we come into the chapter about Mr. Lucas' more recent creative endeavors. Honestly, I began watching the film because I was positive it would be boring and WANTED to start a movie that I would eventually shut off halfway through... but that never happened. Thirty minutes in and I knew I was hooked. Expertly edited, the movie does a WONDERFUL job of integrating fan-made versions of Lucas' work while the fans themselves gripe about how Lucas screwed the pooch.
The BAD: The bad thing about this movie is that it's a conversation that many of us have already had. Several times. At great length. Still, it's better having it with people that can't respond to you when you look at your screen and begin to verbally defend George Lucas. To a movie. While you sit. Alone in your office. Which just further goes to show you what a great movie this is.
The UNFORTUNATE: It's unfortunate that, even over a decade after Episode 1's release, fans are still this upset about the direction George Lucas chose to take with his saga. But as for "The People vs. George Lucas", I'd say the only real unfortunate thing about it is that I hadn't heard of it before and just happened across it on a whim. Do yourself a favor: go watch it.
The GRADE: A-
P.S. I'll be reviewing the ENTIRE STAR WARS SAGA as my next review, so don't expect another post for 2 or 3 weeks yet. THANKS FOR READING!
